Apple unveils a new store in San Francisco which is powered by 100% renewable energy.
Apple’s new store on Union Square aims to create a green space for the community of San Francisco. Apple’s original San Francisco store opened in 2004 with about 100 employees and the new store opened its 42-foot tall sliding glass doors to customers over the weekend, on Saturday 21 May.
It is fully powered by renewable energy, including power produced by photovoltaic panels integrated into the building’s roof. The store also offers seating and public Wi-Fi 24-hours a day in its ‘Plaza’, as well as a 50-foot green wall which will provide regular acoustic performances for customers.
“We have a deep commitment to the cities we work in, and are aware of the importance that architecture plays in the community,” said Jonathan Ive, Apple’s chief design officer. “It all starts with the storefront – taking transparency to a whole new level – where the building blends the inside and the outside, breaking down barriers and making it more egalitarian and accessible.”
Interactive windows placed along the store’s ‘Avenue’ will change with the season and display Apple products and services.
The ‘Genius Grove’ is situated under a canopy of local trees at the centre of the store, where employees can support customer problems, while ‘The Forum’ features a 6K video wall and will be where the community’s artists, photographers, developers, musicians and entrepreneurs can interact with customers. ‘Today at Apple’ will also provide programmes for children, teachers and developers, meanwhile ‘The Boardroom’ is a space where Apple’s business team can offer hands-on advice and training to entrepreneurs, developers and small and medium business customers
Angela Ahrendts, Apple’s senior vice president of retail and online stores, added: “We are not just evolving our store design, but its purpose and greater role in the community as we educate and entertain visitors and serve our network of local entrepreneurs.”
